Most API courses assume you already have C# and a database. This one teaches both first, then builds the RESTful service on top of them.
Building Services with ASP.NET Web API provides the knowledge and skills required to develop RESTful web APIs using ASP.NET Web API. Rather than dropping you straight into controllers and routes, it builds the ground underneath them first.
The progression is deliberate: C# fundamentals, then advanced C#, then SQL Server for backend development, then ASP.NET Web API. By the time you reach the API module you already have the language features it is written in and the database it talks to.
That covers both the programming and the backend concepts before any RESTful service work begins. What you leave with is the ability to design, implement and launch scalable and efficient web services - endpoints that are routed properly, backed by a real schema, and serialized for whatever client is asking.
A basic understanding of web development concepts and prior experience with any programming language would be beneficial. You don't need C# specifically - but this isn't a first-ever programming course.
You know how programs are put together. Module one teaches C# from its fundamentals, so the syntax is new but the thinking isn't.
You've built server-side software before and now need C#, SQL Server and ASP.NET Web API specifically, in the order they fit together.
Routing, CRUD endpoints, content negotiation and serialization - the part of the system other teams consume and complain about.
You understand web development concepts and want to build the services behind them, with the database work that makes them real.
These are the course's own learning outcomes - the language, the database, the service, and the design judgement to hold them together.
From foundational basics to advanced OOP principles, equipping learners with robust software development skills.
From understanding relational database structures to optimizing performance through normalization techniques.
From understanding RESTful service principles to serializing data in JSON and XML for versatile client consumption.
Learn to design scalable and maintainable APIs with ASP.NET Web API, understanding routing configurations, resource management and error handling.

The routing error or null reference you've stared at for an hour, explained by someone who has seen it.
Not just whether the endpoint returns 200 - whether the design holds up as the service grows.
The SQL Server side of the work: tables, joins, indexes and stored procedures, checked by a practitioner.
Which .NET path fits you - backend, API or full stack - and what to learn after this course.
Every lesson, reading and assignment is listed below with its duration - nothing summarised away. Approximately 21 hours of module time, fully self-paced.
The module provides a foundation in C# syntax, concepts and programming principles. It covers the introduction to C#, the history and significance of the language, how C# code is executed, installing and configuring Visual Studio, and your first Hello World program. From there it moves through variables, data types, operators, conditional statements, loops, jump statements, arrays and strings, before closing on object-oriented programming: classes and objects, encapsulation, abstraction, constructors, inheritance and polymorphism.
This module provides an in-depth understanding of advanced C# programming concepts and techniques. It covers abstract classes, interfaces, static classes and methods, extension methods, and partial classes and methods, then moves to properties, indexers, enums and exception handling. The final lessons cover anonymous types, delegates, events, anonymous methods, lambda expressions and expression trees - the language features that appear throughout modern .NET and ASP.NET code.
The module covers SQL Server and the relational database concepts required for backend development. It starts with database fundamentals, an introduction to SQL Server and the types of databases, then works through SQL commands, tables, data manipulation, constraints, SQL clauses, data types and variables, operators and predicates. The second half covers joins, views, indexes, stored procedures, DML operations, functions and triggers - the server-side building blocks an API sits on top of.
This is the core API-development portion of the course. Learners explore service-oriented architecture and REST, then move into ASP.NET Web API itself: how it compares with WCF, how to build a Web API project, and how to create the database behind it. From there the module covers CRUD operations, testing endpoints with Postman, consuming a Web API from ASP.NET MVC, convention and attribute routing, route constraints, content negotiation and media type formatters.

Everything is set up on screen - module one installs and configures Visual Studio before you write a line.
Two full modules: syntax, OOP, interfaces, properties, delegates, events and lambda expressions - written in Visual Studio.
The core of module four: Web API projects, controllers, CRUD endpoints, routing, constraints and media type formatters.
A whole module: tables, constraints, joins, views, indexes, stored procedures, functions and triggers.
Endpoints tested in Postman, responses serialized in JSON and XML, with content negotiation choosing between them.
The twelve skills Coursera lists for this course, grouped the way the work actually splits - the language you write in, the data underneath, and the service on top.
The language the whole stack is written in.

The direct path. Applications on the .NET stack, built from exactly the C#, data access and service layers this course covers.
Server-side logic, schemas and the services a front end calls. Modules three and four are the core of the day job.
Designing and building the endpoints other systems consume - routing, resource management, serialization and error handling.
Web applications and services on ASP.NET, including consuming a Web API from an MVC application as module four demonstrates.
The language itself, from OOP fundamentals through interfaces, delegates, events, lambda expressions and expression trees.
A general engineering role where C#, SQL and REST are three of the most commonly listed requirements on the same posting.
Every topic here is on YouTube, in the docs, and on a dozen blogs - and this is not the only way to learn .NET. Plenty of good engineers picked it up piecemeal. What a structured course adds is the order, the connections between the pieces, and something to show at the end.
This course stands on its own. These are the Board Infinity courses that assume it and build straight on top - toward ASP.NET Core, deeper backend architecture and full-stack .NET.
The modern, cross-platform successor to ASP.NET Framework - routing, validation and authentication for secure, scalable web applications.
View course Go deeper on the backendASP.NET Core's architecture and components, dependency injection, and the patterns robust backend applications are built on.
View course Ship the whole appPair the services you can now build with a React front end, and take an application from database to browser.
View specializationBeyond these, the natural directions are advanced API development (versioning, authentication, caching and pagination), OpenAPI and API documentation, deeper database development, and cloud deployment for .NET applications. It teaches you to build services using ASP.NET Web API, and the concepts required to create RESTful services. The course runs in four modules - C# Programming Fundamentals, Advanced C# Programming, SQL Server for Backend Development, and ASP.NET Web API - so the language and the database are in place before you build the service. By the end you have the skills to design, implement and launch scalable and efficient web services.
Developers, software engineers and backend developers, plus anyone interested in building web APIs who already has a basic grounding in web development. It suits people with prior experience in any programming language who now want to work specifically with C# and ASP.NET Web API. It is listed as an intermediate course.
A basic understanding of web development concepts and prior experience with any programming language would be beneficial. You don't need C# specifically - module one starts from the language's fundamentals - but this is not a first-ever programming course, and it doesn't claim to be.
Four things, in this order: C# programming from foundational basics to advanced OOP principles; SQL Server, from relational database structures to optimizing performance through normalization; ASP.NET Web API, from RESTful service principles to serializing data in JSON and XML; and how to design scalable, maintainable APIs with routing configurations, resource management and error handling.
Coursera's guidance is 2 weeks at 10 hours a week. The four modules run roughly 6, 6, 5 and 4 hours - about 21 hours of module time - across 89 videos, 12 readings and 18 assignments. Evenings and weekends will stretch that out, and the schedule flexes to fit.
Yes. The course has a flexible schedule and deadlines reset to fit your pace, so you can work through it in two focused weeks or spread it across a couple of months without losing access.
Module one (6 hours, 25 videos, 5 readings, 5 assignments) gives you a foundation in C# syntax, concepts and programming principles: an introduction to C#, its version history and how C# code executes, installing and configuring Visual Studio, and a Hello World program. It then covers variables and data types, operators, conditional statements, looping constructs, jump statements, arrays and strings, and closes on object-oriented programming - classes and objects, encapsulation and abstraction, constructors, inheritance and polymorphism.
Module two (6 hours, 19 videos, 4 readings, 4 assignments) goes in depth on advanced C#: abstract classes, interfaces, static classes and methods, extension methods and partial classes and methods; then properties, indexers, enums and exception handling; then anonymous types, delegates, events, anonymous methods, lambda expressions and expression trees.
Module three (5 hours, 27 videos, 5 assignments) covers SQL Server and the relational database concepts backend development needs: database fundamentals and types of databases, SQL commands, tables, data manipulation, constraints, SQL clauses, data types and variables, operators and predicates, joins, views, indexes, stored procedures, DML operations, scalar and table-valued functions, and triggers.
Module four (4 hours, 18 videos, 3 readings, 4 assignments) is the core API portion. It covers service-oriented architecture and REST, an introduction to ASP.NET Web API and how it compares with WCF, building a Web API project, creating the database behind it, CRUD operations, testing with Postman, consuming a Web API in ASP.NET MVC, convention and attribute routing, route constraints, content negotiation and media type formatters.
Yes - that's what the course is for. Module four introduces REST and service-oriented architecture, then walks through building an ASP.NET Web API project end to end, including serializing data in JSON and XML so different clients can consume it.
Yes. Module four has a dedicated lesson on ASP.NET Web API CRUD operations, preceded by creating the database for the Web API and followed by testing those endpoints with Postman and consuming them from an ASP.NET MVC application.
Yes. The last four lessons of module four cover convention and attribute routing, route constraints, content negotiation and media type formatters - the pieces that decide which endpoint handles a request and what format the response comes back in.
Yes - an entire module of 27 lessons is devoted to it, and module four then creates the database that sits behind the Web API. The skills Coursera lists for this course include SQL, Database Design, Database Development, Database Management, and Database Architecture and Administration.
