Sixteen hours from your first Spring Initializr project to a documented, secured REST API backed by Spring Data JPA - every concept demonstrated on screen, then graded.

Most introductions stop at “hello world on port 8080”. This one keeps going - through MVC and Thymeleaf, into JPA entity relationships, and out the other side with JWT, Spring Security and Swagger.
Spring Boot is how Java teams actually ship backends. It takes the Spring Framework and removes the configuration tax - auto-configuration, an embedded server, sensible defaults - so a service that once needed a folder of XML now starts from a single annotated class.
This course trains Java developers in that workflow, in the order a real project needs it. Module 1 builds the foundation: Spring Initializr, project structure, the MVC pattern, Thymeleaf views, dependency injection, beans and profiles. Module 2 makes the data real with Spring Data JPA and Hibernate - entities, repositories, derived queries, one-to-many and many-to-many mappings, validation, transactions and exception handling. Module 3 turns it outward: REST endpoints, JSON responses, status codes, Basic Auth and JWT, role-based access, OAuth2, Swagger and Postman.
Nothing is left as theory. Every concept is demonstrated on screen, then checked by a quiz, and each module closes with a graded quiz worth an hour.
The course is beginner level for Spring Boot, not beginner level for programming. If you can write a class and an interface in Java, you are ready.
You are comfortable with classes, interfaces and object-oriented Java, and you want the framework that Java jobs actually list.
REST API development, database integration and secure web application design - the three things backend interviews keep returning to.
A CRUD service with JPA relationships, validation, JWT auth and Swagger docs is a far stronger portfolio piece than another tutorial to-do app.
You keep meeting @Autowired, @ControllerAdvice and application.yml without ever having been taught what they do. This fills that gap in two weeks.
These are the outcomes Coursera lists for the course - each one is carried by a specific stretch of the syllabus, not a summary of the whole thing.
Spring Initializr, project layout, auto-configuration and the embedded server; then controllers, views and models, HTTP request handling, form submission and data binding, and Thymeleaf templates.
MySQL and PostgreSQL connections, JPA entities and repositories, CRUD, Hibernate and ORM, one-to-many and many-to-many with @JoinColumn and @MappedBy, lazy vs eager loading, JPQL, pagination and sorting.
REST principles, GET/POST/PUT/DELETE controllers, JSON responses, status codes; Basic Auth and JWT, role-based access control, OAuth2; then Swagger and OpenAPI docs, Postman testing and API versioning.
Dependency injection and bean lifecycle, @Component, @Service and @Repository, Java-based and XML configuration, externalized configuration with properties and YAML, environment profiles, and startup runners.
A dedicated coach who writes Spring Boot for a living - someone who can look at the stack trace you have stared at for an hour and tell you why.
Book a demo session60-minute demo session · 100% refundable · no obligation to continue
The BeanCreationException you have stared at for an hour, explained by someone who has seen it before.
Not just whether the endpoint returns 200 - whether your entities, layers and error handling would survive a review.
Problems set for you, then reviewed, so annotations and JPA mappings turn into instinct.
Which Java path fits you - backend, full-stack or platform - and what to learn after this course.
Approximately sixteen hours end to end, fully self-paced. Every module lists its learning objectives, every lesson inside it, and what you leave with.
@ControllerAdvice, and page and sort large result sets@RequestBody, @PathVariable and @RequestParam, and return structured JSONModule titles, lesson names and durations are taken from the public Coursera course page. Coursera occasionally updates course content - the page there is always the live source of truth.
Four tools carry the course. You meet each one at the point in the build where a real project would reach for it.
Auto-configuration, the embedded server and convention over configuration. Projects are generated with Spring Initializr and run from a single annotated class.
Entities, repositories and derived queries over MySQL or PostgreSQL, with Hibernate doing the object-relational mapping underneath.
Basic authentication and JWT, role-based access control and OAuth2 integration, applied to the endpoints you have already built.
Generated API documentation another developer can read, and a Postman workflow for testing every endpoint before it ships.
Coursera lists these against the course: Software Documentation, Java, Enterprise Application Management, Back-End Web Development, Application Deployment, Databases and API Design. Here is where each one is actually earned.
Module 1 - structure, wiring and configuration
Module 2 - persistence, relationships and safety
Module 3 - interface, security and documentation

This is course 1 of 3 in Full-Stack Java Dev with Spring & Spring Boot.
Java is the language; Spring Boot is how the industry writes it. These are the roles where this course is the prerequisite rather than the differentiator.
The default role for this stack: services, persistence and APIs in Spring Boot.
Named explicitly on job listings; the framework knowledge is the requirement.
Designing, securing, versioning and documenting the REST surface other teams consume.
The backend half of the stack, ready to sit behind React, Angular or a mobile client.
Large internal systems where Spring, JPA and role-based security are the house standard.
Teams where JWT, RBAC and OAuth2 are day-one expectations, not stretch goals.
The official reference guide is excellent and costs nothing. What it does not give you is a sequence, a checkpoint, or a reason to finish. Judge the course on that difference, not on access to information.
Enrolling in this course enrols you in the whole specialization - fundamentals here, microservices next, then deployment and scaling on AWS.
Auto-configuration and MVC, Spring Data JPA and Hibernate, then secured and documented REST APIs.

Yes, basic knowledge of Java is required. This course focuses on backend development using Spring Boot and assumes you're familiar with object-oriented programming.
You'll use Spring Boot, Spring Data JPA, Hibernate, Thymeleaf, MySQL/PostgreSQL, Spring Security, Swagger, and Postman. The course is designed around hands-on experience with these tools.
Spring Boot simplifies the setup and configuration of Spring applications. You'll learn how Boot auto-configures projects, streamlining your development workflow.
Absolutely! The course includes step-by-step lessons on connecting to SQL databases, creating entities, and using repositories to perform CRUD operations.
Yes, a complete module is dedicated to building RESTful APIs, handling JSON responses, securing endpoints, and documenting your APIs using Swagger and Postman.
If you dedicate 4-5 hours a week, you can complete the course in 3–4 weeks. It's self-paced, so you can progress as per your convenience. Coursera's own guidance on the course page is 2 weeks at 10 hours a week, which is approximately 16 hours of material in total.
Yes! This course is perfect for aspiring Java backend developers, especially those preparing for roles involving REST API development, database integration, and secure web application design.
When you enroll in the course, you get access to all of the courses in the Specialization, and you earn a certificate when you complete the work. Your electronic Certificate will be added to your Accomplishments page - from there, you can print your Certificate or add it to your LinkedIn profile.
To access course materials, assignments, and earn a Certificate, you'll need to purchase the Certificate experience when you enroll in a course.
