Node.js gives you a server. NestJS gives you an architecture. This course teaches that architecture in the order it builds.
Fundamentals of NestJS is an introduction to NestJS for modern backend development. It is built for developers who can already write JavaScript and now want a framework that supplies the structure plain Node.js leaves to you – modules, controllers, providers, dependency injection and a request pipeline.
The course runs across two modules. Module 1, Getting Started with NestJS, covers what NestJS is and what it can do, sets up the development environment, walks through the project structure, and then moves into controllers, routing, route parameters, query strings, and request and response handling. Module 2, Services, Middleware, and Exception Filters, covers creating services, using providers, dependency injection, modules and service scopes, middleware and exception filters.
The path is deliberate: NestJS fundamentals → development environment → project structure → controllers and routing → services and dependency injection → middleware → exception filters. Each stretch of video is followed by a practice quiz, and the course closes with a graded quiz across the whole syllabus.
The recommended experience is a basic understanding of JavaScript and web development concepts. If one of these is you, this is the right starting point.
You know JavaScript and want to build APIs. NestJS gives you controllers, routing and services rather than a blank file and a folder of opinions.
You are fluent in the language but new to the request pipeline. The course starts at the development environment and the project structure.
You have wired up handlers by hand. Modules, providers and dependency injection are exactly the pieces that stop that becoming unmaintainable.
You want a structured introduction instead of scattered tutorials – fundamentals, controllers, services, middleware and exception filters, in order.
These are the learning outcomes listed for the course. What you leave with is the ability to write these things yourself.
Its role in modern backend development, what the framework can do, and how to set up the development environment and read the project structure.
Controllers, routes, route parameters and query strings, and request and response handling – enough to build robust APIs for various applications.
Services, providers, modules and service scopes – the pieces that make a NestJS application modular, maintainable and scalable.
A dedicated coach who builds Node.js backends for a living – someone who can look at the dependency injection error you have stared at for an hour and tell you why.

The provider that will not inject, the route that never fires – explained by someone who has seen it.
Not just whether the app boots – whether the module boundaries will hold as it grows.
Endpoints set for you, then reviewed, so controllers and services turn into fluency.
Which backend path fits you – APIs, platform or full-stack – and what to learn after NestJS.
Six hours end to end, fully self-paced. Every module lists its learning objectives, every lesson inside it with its duration, and what you leave with.
In Module 1, learners explore the fundamental concepts and setup of NestJS. The module covers introduction to NestJS, NestJS capabilities, development environment setup, project structure, controllers, routing, route parameters, query strings, requests and responses.
In Module 2, learners explore services, dependency injection, middleware, and exception filters for building robust and modular NestJS applications. The module covers creating services, providers, dependency injection, service scopes, modules, middleware, exception filters, and bringing the NestJS concepts together.
Every lesson title and duration above is the course outline as listed on Coursera. Download the full syllabus as a PDF.
Everything you need is free, and module one sets the development environment up on screen.
The whole course. Modules, controllers, routing, providers, dependency injection, middleware and exception filters.
What NestJS runs on. Every controller and service you write in the course executes on the Node runtime.
The family NestJS belongs to. Basic JavaScript and web development knowledge is the recommended starting point.
An editor and a terminal. The development environment is set up in the first lessons, so nothing is assumed in advance.
The capabilities Coursera lists against Fundamentals of NestJS, grouped the way the work actually splits – building the application, structuring the server, and the routing and environment around it.
Turning a framework into something that answers requests.
The architecture that keeps a backend maintainable.
Getting requests to the right place, on the right runtime.

Controllers, services, dependency injection, middleware and exception filters are the day-to-day vocabulary of server-side JavaScript work. These are the directions the skill points in.
The direct line. Controllers, services and the request pipeline are what backend work is made of, whatever the framework on top.
NestJS runs on Node. Modules and dependency injection are the structure most Node teams reach for once a project outgrows a single file.
Roles that name the framework directly. This course covers the fundamentals those job descriptions open with.
Adding the server half of the language. The same JavaScript you already write, applied to routing, services and API responses.
Web application development end to end. Knowing how the API is built changes how you design what sits in front of it.
Modular application architecture, dependency injection and separation of concerns are transferable well beyond one framework.
Board Infinity does not guarantee jobs, salaries, promotions or employment. A course is one input into a career; outcomes depend on your wider experience, portfolio and the market you apply into.
Every topic in this course exists free somewhere on the internet – the official docs are excellent. Nobody is pretending otherwise. What a course adds is the order you learn it in, the checking that makes it stick, and something to show at the end. This is a fundamentals course, not an advanced production NestJS specialization.
These are suggested next directions after this course – they are not covered inside Fundamentals of NestJS. The course stops at exception filters, and that is the right place for it to stop.
The natural next step once controllers and services are second nature: designing a full REST API and the patterns that keep it clean.
Where a practice API becomes an application: who is allowed in, and where the data actually lives between requests.
What happens when one service becomes several – and how the module boundaries you learned here decide whether that goes well.

NestJS is a server-side framework for building Node.js applications. It supplies the architecture that plain Node.js leaves up to you – modules, controllers, providers and dependency injection, plus a request pipeline with middleware and exception filters – so a backend application keeps a predictable shape as it grows. This course is an introduction to it.
Three outcomes, across two modules. You'll understand the core principles of NestJS and its role in modern backend development, including setting up the development environment. You'll master controllers, routing and request/response handling so you can build robust APIs. And you'll develop services and leverage dependency injection, which is what makes an application modular, maintainable and scalable. That's 18 videos, 6 readings and 5 assignments in about 6 hours.
Module 1 covers Understanding Controllers (9 minutes), Route Parameters and Query Strings (6 minutes) and Handling Requests and Responses (9 minutes), with a reading on controllers and routing and a practice quiz on the same material. By the end you can define a controller, attach routes to it, read parameters and query strings out of a request, and shape what goes back.
A service is where your logic lives, separate from the controller that receives the request. Dependency injection is how NestJS hands a controller the service it needs instead of the controller constructing it. Module 2 covers Creating Services, Using Providers and Modules and Service Scopes, plus a reading and a practice quiz on services and dependency injection.
Yes. Understanding Middleware is a 7-minute lesson in Module 2, supported by a reading on middleware and exception filters and a practice quiz covering both. Middleware is the code that runs on a request before it reaches your route handler – logging, parsing, checks of that kind.
Exception filters are how NestJS turns an error into a response instead of a crash. The Exception Filters lesson (5 minutes) in Module 2 covers them, and Putting it all Together shows them working alongside controllers, services and middleware.
Aspiring backend developers, JavaScript developers, Node.js developers, web developers and software developers who want to learn NestJS – and anyone who wants a structured introduction rather than scattered tutorials. It suits people with an interest in backend development who already have some programming footing.
The recommended experience is a basic understanding of JavaScript and web development concepts. The course is listed at Intermediate level, so it does not start from zero programming knowledge – it starts from the assumption that you can already read and write JavaScript.
Yes – a basic understanding of JavaScript is the recommended starting point. You do not need to be an expert, and the course sets up the development environment on screen, but it does not teach the language itself.
