GraphQL Fundamentals – Design APIs, Schema, Frontend Integration is a hands-on introduction to API development with GraphQL. You work with Apollo Server, GraphiQL, Apollo Studio and Apollo Client to design flexible data layers and simplify how your client and server talk to each other.

By the end, you can build GraphQL APIs with Apollo Server and SDL, write and test queries and mutations in GraphiQL, connect React and other frontends with Apollo Client, and monitor and debug your APIs - across 36 short video lessons, 3 readings and 12 assignments.

It's course 1 of Board Infinity's GraphQL Mastery: From Fundamentals to Production specialization on Coursera, and no prior GraphQL experience is required.

02 Who it's for

Built for developers ready to move beyond REST.

If you build, consume or connect APIs, the course was written with you in mind.

Front end

Front-end developers

Fetch exactly the data your UI needs, with Apollo Client in React.

Back end

Back-end developers

Design flexible, typed APIs with Apollo Server and the schema language.

Full stack

Full-stack developers

Connect client and server through a single, efficient GraphQL layer.

Beginners

Students and beginners

Start with what an API is - no prior GraphQL experience required.

03 What you'll learn

Four outcomes. A working GraphQL API.

Each module takes you a step further, from your first query to a React app talking to your own API.

Modules 1-2

08 FAQ

Common questions

Everything learners ask before enrolling, answered plainly.

About the course

You'll learn to build and use GraphQL APIs. Module one covers what an API is, REST vs. GraphQL, schemas, types and fields, queries, mutations and subscriptions, and setting up a server and your first query. Module two covers the Schema Definition Language, custom types, query and mutation types, resolvers, data sources, nested relationships, aliases and fragments. Module three covers arguments and variables, query best practices, Apollo Client with React, and GraphQL Network Inspector and Voyager.

No. Coursera lists this as a beginner-level course, and it starts with what an API is before building up to GraphQL. Some familiarity with JavaScript will help you follow the server and React examples more easily.

The current enrollment options and price for your region are shown on the Coursera course page. The course is included with a Coursera Plus subscription, and Coursera's financial aid is available for eligible learners. Enrollment also includes the whole GraphQL Mastery specialization track.

About 10 hours of total learning across 3 modules of roughly 3 hours each, with 36 video lessons, 3 readings and 12 assignments. Coursera estimates 1 week at 10 hours a week. It's fully self-paced - deadlines flex around your schedule.

Each module has three practice quizzes and a one-hour graded quiz at the end - 12 assignments in all. A reading in each module goes further into mutations and schema design, subscriptions, validation and authorization, and server setup, database integration and deployment.

Yes - this page is Board Infinity's own overview of our course. Enrollment, payment, video lessons, grading and the certificate all happen on Coursera, where the course is hosted. Think of this page as the detailed tour before you head there.

Career & certificate

Yes. Completing the graded quizzes earns you a shareable certificate from Board Infinity, issued through Coursera with its own verification link. You can add it to your LinkedIn profile, resume or CV, and the same completed work counts toward the full specialization certificate.

It supports GraphQL developer and API developer roles, and gives back-end, front-end, full-stack and React developers a practical way to design and consume modern APIs.

Two ways. The certificate goes in your LinkedIn Licenses & Certifications section via Coursera's one-click add. Just as valuable is naming what you know: a line like “Built GraphQL APIs with Apollo Server and SDL, and connected a React frontend with Apollo Client” gives interviewers something concrete to ask about.

No. It's an independent educational resource developed by Board Infinity, and it isn't official preparation material from the GraphQL Foundation.

This is the first course of the specialization, so you can start here. Next come GraphQL API Development: Schema Design, Security & Deployment (~10 hours) and Advanced GraphQL for Developers: Optimize & Scale Modern API (~10 hours). Completing all three earns the specialization certificate.
