Financial Services careers in India: what the numbers say about jobs, growth and where to start
Few sectors in India advertise 34,875 entry-level vacancies in a single recruitment season, on published dates, open to any graduate. Financial services does, and it is also the sector most likely to hand a 23-year-old a number that is theirs to move. A branch target. A loan book. A fund's inflows. A claims ratio. That is the attraction, and it is real.
The problem is the phrase itself. “Financial services” is not one industry. It is at least five, and in the year to March 2026 they had five different years. Banks made record profits on thinning margins. Asset management compounded on household savings. Insurance got a tax cut and a foreign-capital opening in the same twelve months. Non-bank lenders grew faster than banks. And retail broking shrank - because the regulator deliberately made it shrink. Choosing the sector is not the decision. Choosing the pillar is.
This report is built on numbers that can be checked: the Reserve Bank of India, AMFI, IRDAI, NPCI, SEBI and companies' own results releases, with the period stated every time. Start with the five pillars.
Every chart below uses the same six colours, and each one always means the same thing.
One band per pillar, each with its own scale, its own FY26, and its own hiring logic
- Bank credit outstanding on 31 March 2026, up 16% in the year, against deposits of ₹262.3 lakh crore growing 13.4% (RBI).
- Public sector banks alone cleared a record ₹1.98 lakh crore of net profit in FY26, their fourth straight profitable year.
- Gross bad loans fell to 1.8%, a multi-decadal low, with capital adequacy at 17.7% (RBI Financial Stability Report, June 2026).
- The largest single recruiter of graduates in the sector, and the only pillar with a published, calendar-fixed exam route.
- Life insurers wrote ₹4.60 lakh crore of new business premium in FY26, up about 16% (IRDAI).
- General insurers wrote ₹3.36 lakh crore of gross direct premium, up 9%, with health up 17% after the GST change.
- Parliament raised the foreign investment cap from 74% to 100% in February 2026; the core provisions took effect on 5 February 2026.
- And the reason it keeps hiring: penetration is still only 3.7% of GDP and has not moved in years.
- Mutual fund assets reached ₹87.08 lakh crore in August 2026 (AMFI).
- Monthly SIP inflow hit an all-time high of ₹32,297 crore, from 10.02 crore contributing accounts - the first time past 10 crore.
- SIP assets alone are ₹18.62 lakh crore, about 21.4% of the industry.
- Roughly 49 asset managers share it, so teams are small and a graduate is visible fast.
- NBFC balance sheets expanded 18.9% to ₹61.09 lakh crore in FY25, the latest full-year RBI figure.
- Bajaj Finance, the largest listed NBFC, crossed ₹5 lakh crore of assets under management in FY26, up 22%.
- Non-bank lenders have been outgrowing banks, which is why the RBI keeps tightening their rules - see Section 9.
- The clearest counter-example sits here too: microfinance stress, in Section 10.
- Trading accounts registered with the NSE crossed 26 crore in June 2026, adding a crore in under four months.
- Demat accounts stood at 25.7 crore at the end of June 2026 (SEBI).
- But unique individuals trading equity derivatives fell from 98.10 lakh to 78.60 lakh in FY26 after SEBI's curbs.
- A pillar growing in investors and shrinking in speculators at the same time. Both facts are real.
Figures are on the dates stated, not a common date, because these industries report on different calendars. Each is sourced in the section that discusses it.
FY26 means the year ended 31 March 2026 throughout this report
- Record profits: public sector banks cleared ₹1.98 lakh crore, up 11.1%.
- LIC posted its highest ever profit, ₹57,419 crore, up 19.3%.
- Margins thinned as loans repriced faster than deposits after rate cuts.
- Axis Bank's profit fell 7%; HDFC Life's new-business margin lost 140 basis points to 24.2%.
- Household savings: SIP inflow hit a record ₹32,297 crore a month.
- Standalone health insurers grew premium 19.4%, the fastest large pocket in the sector.
- The pillar you join matters more than the logo on the building.
- Public sector banks advertised 34,875 entry-level seats in one recruitment season. Section 13 has the detail.
Each figure is dated; sources are named in the section that discusses it
1. Why look at this sector at all
Four things make financial services worth a serious look, and one should give you pause.
It hires at a scale almost nothing else matches. In a single recruitment season in 2026, the public sector banking system alone advertised 11,403 clerical posts through IBPS, 9,766 at State Bank of India and 34,914 across regional rural banks. That is 34,875 published, dated, examinable vacancies - before a single private bank, insurer, asset manager or fintech opens its campus process.
It gives you a number early. The work is measured in books and portfolios rather than projects, so a second-year analyst is usually accountable for something countable: a delinquency rate, a persistency ratio, a set of inflows. Very few industries will do that, and it is the fastest way to learn how a business actually works. If that appeals, the complete map of finance roles is a good place to see the full range.
It is being rebuilt in public. Insurance opened to 100% foreign ownership in February 2026. The RBI rewrote its digital banking and governance rules in the same window. GIFT City's international financial centre now holds US$111 billion of banking assets. Rebuilds create roles that did not exist when your seniors joined.
The balance sheet is the healthiest it has been in decades. Gross bad loans across scheduled commercial banks fell to 1.8% in March 2026, a multi-decadal low, with capital adequacy at 17.7% and core equity at 15.3% (RBI Financial Stability Report, June 2026). Healthy lenders lend, and lending is what creates jobs two years out.
And the caution: growth in this sector is no longer evenly spread, even inside one company. State Bank of India grew profit 12.9% in FY26 while Axis Bank's fell 7%, in the same economy, under the same rate cycle. Joining the wrong pillar inside the right employer is a real risk, and Section 4 is about exactly that.
Each band carries a headline number and the evidence behind it
- Deposits held by scheduled commercial banks on 31 March 2026, against ₹213.6 lakh crore of credit outstanding (RBI).
- Credit grew 16% in FY26 while deposits grew 13.4% - the gap is the single most-watched tension in Indian banking.
- Public sector banks' aggregate business reached ₹283.3 lakh crore, up 12.8%.
- Twelve public sector banks, around 21 private banks, 12 small finance banks and 28 regional rural banks make up the licensed field.
- Gross NPA ratio of scheduled commercial banks in March 2026 - a multi-decadal low (RBI Financial Stability Report, June 2026).
- Net NPA was 0.5%, capital adequacy 17.7% and common equity tier-1 15.3%, all at or near multi-decade highs.
- Public sector banks' gross NPA fell to 1.93% from 2.58% a year earlier, with net NPA at 0.39%, the lowest on record.
- The RBI's stress tests show banks staying above minimum capital even under severe scenarios.
- Contributing SIP accounts in August 2026 - the first month above ten crore (AMFI).
- Mutual fund assets of ₹87.08 lakh crore across 28.09 crore folios.
- 59.09 crore Jan Dhan accounts held ₹3.17 lakh crore as on 19 August 2026.
- The RBI's Financial Inclusion Index rose to 70.0 in March 2026 from 67.0 a year earlier, driven by usage rather than access.
- UPI payments in August 2026 alone, worth ₹29.82 lakh crore (NPCI).
- About 791 million payments a day, up 22% on August 2025 by volume.
- A second consecutive record month, and the rail almost every new financial product in India now launches on.
- This is also where the newest job titles sit - see fintech and payments careers.
2. How big it is, and how fast it is really growing
You will meet a lot of forecasts in this sector - market sizes for 2030, projected compound growth rates, the number of dollars India's financial system will be worth by some future date. They are worth knowing and they are not measurements. Everything in this section has already happened.
The first thing to get right is the difference between a stock and a flow. Bank deposits of ₹262.3 lakh crore is a stock: the amount sitting there on one date. Life insurance new business premium of ₹4.60 lakh crore is a flow: what was written across twelve months. Comparing the two directly is one of the most common mistakes in interviews, and one of the easiest to avoid.
Stocks outstanding on the date shown, ₹ lakh crore - not annual flows
Insurance and NBFC figures are as at 31 March 2025, the latest full-year regulatory totals published; the rest are 2026. They are not directly comparable across dates, and are shown together only for scale.
Now the growth. Measured, full-year, FY26, and deliberately including the one line that went backwards.
Year ended 31 March 2026 against the year before, per cent
Unique individuals trading equity derivatives fell from 98.10 lakh in FY25 to 78.60 lakh in FY26 (SEBI). Insurance figures per IRDAI and the General Insurance Council; bank figures per RBI.
“India's mutual fund industry is ₹87 lakh crore” is a stock - the value of everything held on one day, which rises when markets rise even if nobody invests a rupee. “SIP inflow was ₹32,297 crore” is a flow - money that actually arrived in August 2026. In a rising market the stock flatters you; in a falling one the flow is the only honest read on whether customers are still buying. Learn to say which one you mean.
3. Who leads, who is stuck, and what that tells you
Ten companies, four pillars, one financial year. Read this chart for the spread rather than the ranking: the same twelve months produced +19.3% at one large employer and −7.0% at another.
Year ended 31 March 2026, ₹ crore, each on its own reported basis
Banks are shown on a standalone basis; Bajaj Finance, LIC, HDFC AMC and SBI Life on the basis each reports as its headline. Kotak's consolidated profit was ₹19,288 crore. Source: each company's FY26 results release.
| Company | Pillar | FY26 profit | Change | What it signals for someone joining |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| State Bank of India | Banking | ₹80,032 cr | +12.9% | First Indian bank past ₹80,000 crore. Return on equity 18.57%, gross NPA 1.49%. The largest recruiter in the sector and the deepest training in rural and government banking. Promotion is slow and exposure is unmatched |
| HDFC Bank | Banking | ₹74,670 cr | +10.9% | The private benchmark. Deposits reached ₹31.05 lakh crore, up 14.4%, against 10% growth in average advances - a bank deliberately funding first and lending second. Strong systems, structured graduate intake |
| LIC | Insurance | ₹57,419 cr | +19.3% | Highest profit in its history on total premium of ₹5,35,984 crore, up 9.8%. Still 56.66% of first-year premium industry-wide. Enormous, process-driven, and the single biggest employer of insurance graduates |
| ICICI Bank | Banking | ₹50,147 cr | +6.2% | The most profitable large bank per rupee of assets: 4.32% net interest margin, 2.22% return on assets, 40.1% cost-to-income. Analytics-heavy culture. Worked through in detail in Section 11 |
| Axis Bank | Banking | ₹24,457 cr | −7.0% | The one large bank whose profit fell. Net interest income grew only 3% and operating profit 2%, while fee income grew 9%. A live lesson in what happens when funding costs move against you |
| Bank of Baroda | Banking | ₹20,021 cr | +2.2% | Large international book for a public sector bank, so unusual overseas exposure early. Gross NPA 1.89% |
| Bajaj Finance | Non-bank | ₹19,332 cr | AUM +22% | Assets under management crossed ₹5 lakh crore, reaching ₹5,09,975 crore. The clearest demonstration that non-banks can outgrow banks. Fast, target-driven, and where collections and credit-risk skills are built |
| Kotak Mahindra Bank | Banking | ₹14,008 cr | +2.0% | Consolidated profit of ₹19,288 crore across bank, broking, insurance and asset management - the closest thing to a whole-sector employer under one roof. Smaller bank, so ownership comes earlier |
| HDFC AMC | Asset mgmt | ₹2,860 cr | +16% | Operating revenue ₹4,120 crore, up 18%. Profit is small in absolute terms and enormous per employee - asset management is the highest-leverage pillar and therefore the hardest to enter |
| SBI Life | Insurance | ₹2,470 cr | +2.4% | Gross written premium ₹1,01,290 crore, up 19.2%, with new business value up 12.1%. 60% of new business comes through the SBI branch network - bancassurance is the job here |
“Which pillar does this role's P&L sit in, and what did that P&L do last year?” A graduate trainee at a bank that also owns an asset manager and a life insurer can end up in any of three businesses that grew at 2%, 16% and 19% respectively. The recruiter will rarely volunteer the difference. The answer tells you what your first two years will actually feel like.
4. Where the growth actually sits
Three pockets are growing materially faster than the sector, and each one is short of people. One large pocket is shrinking, and it is worth knowing before you accept an offer there.
Household savings products. SIP inflow reached ₹32,297 crore in August 2026, an all-time high, and contributing SIP accounts passed ten crore for the first time. Mutual funds opened 66.39 lakh new SIPs that month. This is a distribution and servicing problem at national scale, and it is why asset management, wealth advisory and registrar operations keep hiring.
Health insurance. Standalone health insurers grew gross premium 19.4% in FY26 against 16.0% the previous year, and health across all insurers grew 17%. Removing GST on individual health and life cover from 22 September 2025 made policies visibly cheaper at exactly the moment the sector opened to 100% foreign capital. Private insurers including standalone health players took market share to 70.7% from 67.3%.
The international financial centre. GIFT City IFSC held US$111 billion of banking assets in March 2026 and hosts more than 1,000 registered entities, with 37 banks running international banking units. Headcount is small in absolute terms - around 25,000 professionals - which is precisely why an early entrant is visible.
And the pocket that shrank. Retail equity derivatives. Unique individuals trading them fell from 98.10 lakh to 78.60 lakh in FY26. Angel One, the largest listed discount broker by client base, saw total income fall 1.8% and profit fall 21.9%. Broking is not a bad career; it is a career whose revenue model the regulator changed on purpose, and you should know that before you join one.
| Growth pocket | FY26 evidence | Why it is short of people |
|---|---|---|
| SIP and retail asset management | SIP inflow ₹32,297 crore in August 2026, an all-time high; 10.02 crore contributing accounts; SIP assets ₹18.62 lakh crore, 21.4% of the industry | Around 49 asset managers serve 28.09 crore folios. Operations, distribution support and investor servicing scale with accounts, not with assets |
| Health insurance | Standalone health insurers +19.4%; health premium across all insurers +17%; private and SAHI share up to 70.7% from 67.3% | Underwriting, claims adjudication and provider-network management are specialist skills that very few graduates arrive with |
| GIFT City IFSC | US$111 billion of banking assets at March 2026; 37 banks including 20 foreign; over 1,000 registered entities; about 25,000 professionals | A new jurisdiction with its own regulator. Almost nobody has more than three years of experience in it, which flattens the seniority curve |
| Non-bank lending | NBFC balance sheets grew 18.9% to ₹61.09 lakh crore in FY25; Bajaj Finance AUM crossed ₹5 lakh crore in FY26, up 22% | Growth is in small-ticket, high-volume credit where scorecard-driven underwriting and collections analytics decide profitability |
| Retail equity derivatives | Unique individual traders fell from 98.10 lakh to 78.60 lakh; aggregate retail net losses ₹91,685 crore in FY26, down from ₹1.12 lakh crore | Shrinking, and shown here so you can recognise it. Headcount in acquisition-led broking roles follows the client count |
5. How a financial product reaches a customer, and the jobs that do it
A savings account, a term loan, a health policy and a mutual fund are different products, but they reach a customer through only four kinds of channel. Almost every entry-level job in the sector sits in one of them, and knowing which one you are applying to is more useful than knowing the company's share price.
Every channel needs different people, and pays attention to different numbers
Accounts, folios and subscribers on the dates shown - people served, not rupees held
A folio and a demat account are not one person - many people hold several, and the same person appears in more than one bar. These are account counts, not unique individuals. Serving them is the job of about 1.64 lakh bank branches (RBI, 31 March 2025) plus the agency and distribution networks layered on top.
| Channel | Typical entry role | What you are measured on | What it teaches you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Branch and relationship | Relationship manager, probationary officer, customer service associate | Deposits mobilised, cross-sell per customer, service turnaround | How ordinary people actually make financial decisions. Nothing else substitutes for it, and everyone senior in this sector has done it |
| Bancassurance and agency | Channel manager, agency development manager, sales trainer | Partner productivity, policies per active seller, persistency at 13 months | How to get results from people who do not report to you - the single most transferable skill in the sector |
| Intermediary and distribution | Distributor relationship manager, dealer sales, empanelment executive | Partner activation, share of the partner's book, disbursement per partner | Incentive design. Why a distributor sells one fund and not another is a commercial question, not a product one |
| Digital and platform | Growth analyst, product operations, digital lending associate | Funnel conversion, cost per acquisition, first-payment default | Unit economics at volume. The pocket where AI is actually landing first, because the data is clean and the decisions repeat |
6. The platform shift, and the skill it created
India's payments rail changed the sector's cost base before it changed anything else. UPI processed 24.51 billion payments worth ₹29.82 lakh crore in August 2026 - about 791 million a day, up 22% year on year by volume and 20% by value. It was the second consecutive record month.
What matters for a career is the second-order effect. Once payment is free and instant, the competitive question stops being who can move the money and becomes who understands the customer the money reveals. That has created a genuinely new job family: people who can read behavioural data and turn it into a credit decision, a product prompt or a fraud flag. Industry hiring surveys now put BFSI at roughly 40% of all data analytics roles advertised in India - an estimate rather than an official statistic, but a consistent one.
Four participants handle the payment. On a person-to-merchant UPI payment, the rail itself charges nothing
Paytm is the clean worked example: FY26 revenue of ₹8,437 crore, up 22%, and a first full-year profit of ₹552 crore - earned beside the payment rather than on it.
UPI person-to-merchant payments carry no merchant discount rate. A company can therefore process billions of transactions and book almost no revenue from them. When a payments business quotes transaction volume as evidence of growth, ask what it monetises instead - lending distribution, subscriptions, or devices. Paytm's FY26 is the clean example: revenue of ₹8,437 crore, up 22%, and its first full-year profit of ₹552 crore, built on what sits beside the payment rather than the payment itself.
The same shift is why compliance became a growth function rather than a cost one. From 1 April 2026 the RBI required two-factor authentication for all digital payments and brought in Digital Banking Channels Authorisation Directions covering real-time alerts and monitoring. Every one of those obligations is somebody's job.
7. How the money is made, and what you will be measured on
There are only four ways to earn money in this sector. Knowing which one your employer uses tells you, immediately, which number your performance review will be about.
Almost every financial services role sits under one of these
- Lenders borrow cheap and lend dear. Banks, NBFCs, housing finance.
- The metric is net interest margin: ICICI Bank 4.32%, Kotak 4.60%, HDFC Bank 3.38% in FY26.
- Insurers collect premium now and pay claims later, investing in between.
- The metrics are new business margin (HDFC Life 24.2%) and persistency - whether customers keep paying.
- Asset and wealth managers charge a slice of what they hold.
- The metric is AUM × yield. HDFC AMC turned ₹4,120 crore of operating revenue into ₹2,860 crore of profit in FY26.
- Brokers, exchanges, payment processors and registrars charge per event.
- The metric is volume × take rate, and it is the model most exposed to a regulator changing the rules.
Because spread is by far the largest model, it is worth seeing one lender's year all the way through. ICICI Bank is used here because it discloses each line cleanly and the arithmetic reconciles exactly.
ICICI Bank, FY26, ₹ crore - percentages are of core operating income
Every figure is from ICICI Bank's Q4 FY26 results release. Core operating income excludes treasury income, so profit after tax is not a simple subtraction from the lines above it.
| Pillar | The number that decides the year | Good looks like | Where it can be found |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banks and NBFCs | Net interest margin | Above 3.5% for a large bank; ICICI 4.32% and Kotak 4.60% in FY26 were the strongest large-bank margins | Quarterly results release, first page |
| Banks and NBFCs | Gross NPA ratio | Below 2%. The system was at 1.8% in March 2026; ICICI 1.40%, Kotak 1.20%, SBI 1.49% | Results release and the RBI Financial Stability Report |
| Banks and NBFCs | Cost-to-income ratio | Around 40% is strong; ICICI was 40.1% in FY26 | Results release, or computed from the P&L |
| Life insurance | Value of new business margin | Low to mid twenties; HDFC Life 24.2% in FY26, down 140 basis points | Investor presentation |
| Life insurance | Persistency at 13 and 61 months | High 13-month persistency means the policies actually stay on the books | Investor presentation, usually a dedicated slide |
| General and health insurance | Combined ratio | Below 100% means underwriting itself is profitable, before investment income | Results release |
| Asset management | AUM and yield on AUM | AUM growth above industry, with yield holding; industry AUM was ₹87.08 lakh crore in August 2026 | AMFI monthly data and the AMC's results |
| Broking and payments | Active clients and revenue per client | Both rising together. Angel One's income fell 1.8% and profit 21.9% in FY26 | Monthly exchange data and quarterly results |
8. What is being built, and where
Two build-outs are worth a graduate's attention, because both are creating roles faster than they are creating experienced people to fill them.
GIFT City. The International Financial Services Centre at GIFT City held US$111 billion of banking assets in March 2026, up from US$14 billion in September 2020. Thirty-seven banks operate international banking units there, twenty of them foreign. More than a thousand entities are registered across banking, funds, insurance, fintech and aircraft leasing. About 25,000 people work there today.
The branch network, still. Despite everything digital, scheduled commercial banks were running about 1.64 lakh domestic branches at end-March 2025, and roughly half the new branches opened that year were in tier-1 centres. Public sector banks' aggregate business grew 12.8% to ₹283.3 lakh crore in FY26. Physical distribution is not being dismantled; it is being re-pointed at deposits, which is the resource banks are actually short of.
Total banking assets booked at the International Financial Services Centre, US$ billion
Source: IFSCA and GIFT City disclosures. Around 25,000 professionals work across more than a thousand registered entities.
Employment centres named by their function rather than ranked by size
- The RBI, SEBI, the NSE, the BSE, LIC and most large private banks, insurers and asset managers.
- Almost every markets-facing, treasury and investment role in India starts or ends here.
- Also the densest concentration of the sector's regulatory and legal work.
- Banking assets at the IFSC in March 2026, with 37 banks running international banking units.
- A separate regulator, the IFSCA, and a separate rulebook to learn.
- Around 25,000 professionals, so the seniority curve is unusually flat.
- Global capability centres for international banks and insurers, plus most large Indian fintechs.
- Where data, platform and model-risk roles concentrate.
- A 42% skills gap in AI and data roles has been reported across BFSI capability centres.
- Bank branches at end-March 2025, plus the agency and distribution networks layered on top of them.
- 59.09 crore Jan Dhan accounts are serviced through this network.
- This is where public sector recruitment actually places people, and it is rarely a metro.
9. The rules you will work inside
Four regulators divide this sector between them, and one of the quickest ways to sound informed in an interview is to know which one governs the business you are applying to. A fuller treatment sits in regulation and governing bodies; this is the working map.
Who writes the rules for the business you are about to join
- Banks, NBFCs, payment systems and monetary policy.
- Repo rate held at 5.25% in August 2026; CRR 3.00%.
- Stock exchanges, brokers, mutual funds and listed-company disclosure.
- Set the derivatives curbs that cut retail participation 19.9% in FY26.
- Life, general, health and standalone health insurers, and intermediaries.
- Oversaw the move to 100% FDI, effective 5 February 2026.
- The National Pension System and Atal Pension Yojana.
- Combined assets crossed ₹16 lakh crore with 9.6 crore subscribers.
Four rule changes landed inside this financial year, and each one changed somebody's job description.
| Change | When it took effect | What it actually does | What it changes for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insurance FDI raised to 100% | Passed 17 December 2025; core provisions from 5 February 2026 | The Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha (Amendment of Insurance Laws) Bill lifted the foreign ownership cap from 74% to 100% under the automatic route, with a 20% cap retained for LIC. The Finance Ministry amended the FEMA rules to match | New entrants and recapitalised joint ventures build teams from scratch. Historically the fastest way for a graduate to get a wide brief |
| GST removed on individual life and health cover | 22 September 2025 | Individual life and health insurance premiums became GST-free, cutting the price the customer pays | Health premium growth jumped to 17% for the year. Sales and underwriting volumes rose with it |
| RBI digital banking and governance regime | From January 2026; authentication rules from 1 April 2026 | A fresh authorisation regime for digital channels, ring-fencing of core banking from group entities, tighter liquidity assumptions on digital deposits, mandatory two-factor authentication and real-time alerts | Compliance, model risk and technology-control roles moved from back office to the centre of bank hiring |
| SEBI equity derivatives curbs | Phased through FY25 and FY26 | Minimum index contract value raised to about ₹15 lakh, weekly expiries reduced, margins tightened | Retail traders fell from 98.10 lakh to 78.60 lakh and aggregate net losses fell from ₹1.12 lakh crore to ₹91,685 crore. Acquisition-led broking roles contracted with them |
It is worth understanding how one of these actually travels from a parliamentary vote to a job advertisement, because the lag is longer than people expect and it is where hiring happens.
10. What could go wrong
A healthy sector is not a riskless one, and the risks here are specific rather than atmospheric. These are the four the regulator itself is watching.
| Risk | Evidence | What it would look like for you |
|---|---|---|
| Deposits cannot keep up with loans | Credit grew 16% in FY26 against deposit growth of 13.4%, leaving the credit-deposit ratio elevated. Axis Bank's profit fell 7% in a year its advances grew strongly | Deposit mobilisation targets get harder and are pushed down to branch staff. If your role touches liabilities, expect the pressure there first |
| Microfinance and small-ticket unsecured stress | Stressed assets in NBFC microfinance rose to 5.9% in March 2025 from 3.9% in September 2024, with gross NPA in the segment roughly doubling to 4.1% | Collections headcount rises while origination headcount is frozen. A hard first job, and genuinely good training in credit |
| Household leverage and cyber risk | The RBI's June 2026 Financial Stability Report flags rising household debt, a shift in bank funding costs, and AI-enabled cyberattacks - ranked the top risk by the banks and NBFCs it surveyed | Fraud, financial-crime monitoring and model-risk teams grow. These are now among the most reliably hiring functions in the sector |
| Regulation reshaping a revenue line overnight | SEBI's derivatives curbs cut retail participants 19.9% in one year. The RBI has proposed restricting NBFCs from offering revolving credit products unless authorised to issue credit cards | A product you were hired to sell can stop existing. Ask what share of your employer's revenue depends on a single regulatory permission |
None of the four above is a crisis, and the system-level numbers are the strongest in decades - 1.8% gross NPA, 17.7% capital adequacy. The point is not that the sector is fragile. It is that risk in financial services is concentrated in specific books and specific products rather than spread evenly, so “the sector is healthy” and “my team is under pressure” can both be true at once.
11. One company's year, in detail
ICICI Bank's FY26 is worth walking through because it is the clearest worked example of the four levers a lender actually pulls, and every figure is in one published results release.
A bank can do everything right on margin, cost and credit and still grow profit only 6.2%, because the base is now enormous. If you are choosing between a large bank and a smaller lender, this is the trade: the large bank gives you the best systems and the best training, and a percentage-point of growth that is very hard to move. Bajaj Finance grew assets 22% in the same year on a book a third the size.
12. Latest developments
Everything below is dated. Financial services restates itself every quarter, so treat anything older than two quarters as context rather than fact.
| Date | Development | Why it matters to you |
|---|---|---|
| 1 August 2026 | IBPS notified 11,403 Customer Service Associate vacancies across 11 public sector banks under CRP CSA-XVI, with prelims on 10 and 11 October 2026 and mains on 27 December 2026 | The single largest published entry-level opportunity in the sector, on a fixed and announced calendar |
| August 2026 | SBI's clerical recruitment advertised 9,766 Junior Associate posts, and IBPS RRB notified 34,914 posts across regional rural banks | Together with IBPS Clerk, 34,875 advertised entry seats in one season |
| August 2026 | UPI set a record 24.51 billion transactions worth ₹29.82 lakh crore, a second consecutive record month | Confirms the payments rail is still compounding, and with it the analytics roles built on its data |
| August 2026 | Monthly SIP inflow reached an all-time high of ₹32,297 crore and contributing SIP accounts crossed 10 crore for the first time | The clearest single indicator of where retail financial services hiring is heading |
| August 2026 | The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee held the repo rate at 5.25% unanimously, raising its FY27 growth forecast to 6.7% and lowering its inflation estimate to 5.0% | A stable rate outlook means margin pressure eases; banks plan headcount against it |
| 31 August 2026 | The RBI's special FCNR(B) dollar-rupee swap window closed | Deposits placed from 1 September no longer carry concessional pricing. A small change with a visible effect on NRI deposit desks |
| 16 July 2026 | The RBI reported its Financial Inclusion Index at 70.0 for March 2026, up from 67.0, with the gain driven by the usage sub-index | Usage rising faster than access is the signal that servicing and engagement roles, not just account-opening roles, are what the system now needs |
| 30 June 2026 | The RBI's Financial Stability Report put scheduled commercial banks' gross NPA at a multi-decadal low of 1.8%, with capital adequacy at 17.7% and CET1 at 15.3% | The balance-sheet backdrop against which every hiring plan in the sector is currently being written |
| September 2026 | The RBI proposed restricting NBFCs from offering revolving credit products unless authorised to issue credit cards, and deferred its e-fraud compensation framework to January 2027 | A reminder that non-bank product permissions are actively being narrowed |
| 3 August 2026 | SEBI introduced a Closing Auction Session in the cash segment and said it would review how derivative settlement prices are determined as a result | Market-structure changes of this kind are the substance of operations and risk roles at brokers and exchanges |
Four free sources, checked monthly, will keep you better informed than most people already working in the sector: NPCI's UPI product statistics page, AMFI's monthly industry data, the RBI's press releases, and the IBPS and SBI careers pages during recruitment season. Fifteen minutes a month is enough.
13. The jobs themselves
There are four genuine routes into this sector, and most candidates attempt only the first two. The third and fourth have far smaller applicant pools.
Different entry mechanisms, different odds, different starting points
- IBPS, SBI and RRB recruitment. 34,875 advertised seats in the 2026 season alone.
- Open to any graduate, published calendar, no campus required.
- Graduate and management trainee intakes at private banks, insurers, asset managers and NBFCs.
- Structured rotation, faster ladder, and limited to the campuses each employer visits.
- CA, actuarial, CFA, FRM and the NISM certifications that some roles legally require.
- Slower to start, and it routes you past the entry tier entirely. See certifications: cost, time and what they unlock.
- Fintech, GIFT City and global capability centres hire on demonstrated skill rather than pedigree.
- The smallest applicant pool, and the one where a portfolio beats a transcript.
The public exam route, in numbers
This route deserves specifics because it is the only one with a published, verifiable calendar. In the 2026 season: IBPS notified 11,403 Customer Service Associate posts on 1 August 2026 under CRP CSA-XVI, across 11 participating public sector banks, with applications closing 21 August, prelims on 10 and 11 October 2026 and mains on 27 December 2026. State Bank of India advertised 9,766 Junior Associate posts with applications closing 31 August. IBPS RRB notified 34,914 posts for officer and clerical grades under CRP RRBs XV.
Two things follow. First, the total is large: 34,914 advertised seats in a single season, which is more entry-level hiring than most sectors do in a decade. Second, the dates are fixed and public, which means preparation can be planned backwards from them - something no campus process allows. Check the IBPS site for the current notification rather than relying on any summary, including this one.
What each function actually does
| Function | What the first year actually involves | Who hires most of it |
|---|---|---|
| Branch banking and relationship management | Deposit and current-account acquisition, cross-selling insurance and investments, service resolution. High customer contact, target-driven, usually outside a metro | Every bank. The largest single entry pool in the sector |
| Credit and underwriting | Assessing borrowers against a policy or a scorecard, writing credit notes, monitoring the portfolio after disbursement. Analytical and slower-paced | Banks, NBFCs and housing finance companies. See the credit appraisal framework |
| Risk, compliance and financial crime | KYC and anti-money-laundering operations, regulatory reporting, monitoring alerts, model validation. Rules-heavy and expanding fast after the 2026 digital banking directions | Banks, NBFCs and global capability centres |
| Insurance distribution and operations | Channel and agency management, underwriting support, claims adjudication, persistency management | Life, general and standalone health insurers, plus bancassurance teams inside banks |
| Asset and wealth management | Investor servicing, distributor support, fund operations, research support. Small teams, high visibility, hardest to enter | Around 49 asset managers, plus wealth arms of banks and brokers |
| Markets, treasury and investment banking | Trade support, settlement, treasury operations, deal execution support. Concentrated in Mumbai and increasingly GIFT City | Large banks, brokers, exchanges and IFSC entities |
| Data, product and platform | Funnel analysis, credit model support, product operations, fraud analytics. The newest family and the least standardised | Fintechs, digital lending arms and capability centres. Hiring surveys put BFSI at about 40% of India's advertised data analytics roles |
What the first eighteen months look like
Volume or risk: the choice that actually matters
| The volume side | The risk side | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical roles | Relationship management, distribution, channel and agency management, growth and acquisition | Credit and underwriting, compliance and financial crime, actuarial, model risk, audit |
| Measured on | How much you brought in: deposits, premium, disbursement, clients, inflows | How much did not go wrong: delinquency, loss ratio, audit findings, model performance |
| What a good day feels like | A target hit, a partner activated, a large client closed | A bad loan you declined, an alert that was real, a clean regulatory inspection |
| How the career compounds | Into general management and business leadership. The P&L eventually becomes yours | Into specialist authority. Chief risk officer, appointed actuary, head of compliance - narrower, harder to replace, and increasingly well paid |
| Where it is hiring hardest in 2026 | Deposit mobilisation and health insurance distribution, for the reasons in Sections 4 and 10 | Financial crime, model risk and cyber, after the RBI's 2026 digital banking directions |
Aggregator sites publish confident-looking pay ranges for these roles that are almost entirely self-reported, rarely dated, and frequently conflate a fixed salary with a target-inclusive one. This report does not quote them, because none of them can be verified the way every other number here can. For public sector roles the pay scale is published in the recruitment notification itself, which is the one figure you can actually rely on. For private roles, ask about the fixed-to-variable split before you ask about the total.
For employer-by-employer preparation, this breakdown by employer type is more specific than anything a general guide can be, and these interview questions with model answers cover the technical ground most first-round conversations actually stay on.
14. The numbers to learn, and what to do next
You do not need to memorise this report. You need six numbers, the ability to say what each one measures, and the habit of checking them yourself.
| Number | What it measures | Where to find it | What good looks like now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net interest margin | The spread a lender earns between what it pays for money and what it charges for it | Any bank's quarterly results release, first page | ICICI 4.32% and Kotak 4.60% were the strongest large-bank margins in FY26 |
| Gross NPA ratio | The share of loans that have stopped performing | Results release, or the RBI Financial Stability Report for the system | 1.8% system-wide in March 2026, a multi-decadal low |
| Credit-deposit ratio | Whether a bank is lending faster than it can fund itself | Computed from the RBI's weekly statistical supplement | Credit grew 16% against deposits at 13.4% in FY26 - the gap is the tension |
| Monthly SIP inflow | Whether households are still buying, independent of what markets did | AMFI's monthly data, published in the first fortnight | ₹32,297 crore in August 2026, an all-time high |
| Value of new business margin | How profitable an insurer's newly written policies are | The insurer's quarterly investor presentation | HDFC Life 24.2% in FY26, down 140 basis points |
| UPI monthly volume and value | The health of the rail almost every new product launches on | NPCI's product statistics page, updated monthly | 24.51 billion payments worth ₹29.82 lakh crore in August 2026 |
If you want to go deeper on reading a financial company's accounts, how analysts actually read the numbers is the right next step, and the performance metrics guide covers the lending-specific ratios in more depth than this report can.
Every figure in this report is traceable to the Reserve Bank of India, SEBI, IRDAI, AMFI, NPCI, PFRDA, an official recruitment notification or a company's own results release, with the period stated in the text. Data is current as of 11 September 2026. This sector restates itself every quarter, so treat anything older than two quarters as context rather than fact.
