From A Hectic & Slow Growth Job in Mechanical Engineering to becoming a Data Engineer

My Early Career Journey

My name is Sheshan. I am from Wardha, Maharashtra.

I graduated from Bapurao Deshmukh College of Engineering in Wardha with a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering in 2016. My next step was to pursue a course in Design Engineering in 2017 and to join Tata Toyo Radiator in Pune as a Packaging Design Engineer. After 2 years of work, I was promoted to Process Design Engineer.

Meanwhile, I was also pursuing an M.Tech degree (distance course) in Design Engineering from BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus, as this would help me become more proficient in the field.  As a Process Design Engineer, I gained experience with data analysis, interpretation, and visualization, which led to my interest in the field of Data Science.

However,  despite spending so many years in Mechanical Engineering and gaining experience, my development as a professional remained stagnant. In addition, the hectic work culture of working 14-16 hours on the field was a strain on my health.

I was reconsidering my career options when I saw my friends in the IT sector whose jobs were unaffected by the pandemic and were also growing steadily. Consequently, I sought out another career field, which included Data Science, one of the easiest ways to enter the IT field, where one can both achieve success and maintain a healthy balance in both personal and professional life.

Organizations these days are accepting certification courses which are also an excellent way to learn along with your job, so I chose Board Infinity's Data Science course while continuing my job.

Retrospectively, I can say I made a good decision.

Learning with Board Infinity

I started the Learning Path in Data Science Course with Board Infinity in March 2021. The experience has been great!

Course materials covered everything that is required by industry standards and the instructors has extensive industry knowledge.

I was happy to teach by excellent mentors like Prashant Sir and Shipra Gupta ma'am. The course was structured and taught in a way that any layman could grasp the concepts easily because the coaches are thorough with their concepts.

With all of the skills that I learned, I also got to practice much as much with the help of projects. I was given real case studies of the industry to hone my skills and help construct my mindset around the actual functioning. As a result, in a very short time, I developed a good amount of knowledge in Data Science despite coming from a non-IT background.

Placement Journey

Right from the start, Board Infinity was helping us prepare for the placement after the completion of every module, so we could easily identify where we needed to practice more.

Even though I was from a non-IT background, it only took me months to switch to an IT job at a great company.  All thanks go to Board Infinity and its mentors for guiding me to success in starting a career in Data Science.

I would also want to thank my program managers who helped me reschedule my classes due to the hectic work schedule. Thanks to this course, I left my job in the mechanical engineering field with low growth opportunities and will be joining Genpact tomorrow.

Fingers-crossed, I am hoping to build my future in Data Science and look forward to learning so many new things.

Mock interviews were regularly conducted to help us build confidence for the real interview day.

My knowledge of SQL helped me ace the interview and land my first Data Science job at Genpact, where I was interviewed for the position of Data Engineer.

Even though the interview was difficult, the preparation and knowledge I had gathered in these months allowed me to breeze through it.
